Ok, just wondering here, but do any of you have trouble understanding people with accents? I only ask because last night, this morning actually, a girl I met on the internet asked me to call her. I did, & she hung up on me after a half dozen words. According to her friend, she couldn't understand me. I am from the South, so I do have a bit of a Southern accent, not an aweful one, most people can hardly tell it's there, & I sure can't notice it when I try to listen to myself. I can generally understand people no matter what sort of accent they have, so long as they speak all of their words in English, not a mixture of English & their native language. Just curious about how well everyone else can understand others.

I usually don't have too much of a problem with accents. Though sometimes I do have to listen more closely to catch everything the first time around. Depends on what accent it is/how pronounced it is.

it really depends how strong of an accent you have. i live in New Jersey, and i have no accent... why does everyone think we say "new jeysey"? pfft... i wanna go down south, my friend brought me souveniers from there. mm...apple butter. yumm.. :D anyway, i barely understand Indian accents. its like "wtf", so i just smile and nod. :\ haha, but i think i can understand accents from down south. =]

I don't really find it much of a problem.... It takes a few words to get accustomed to a really strong accent, like up North or a London accent(a native speaker), but after a couple of minutes, i understand it.

Foreigners however are differant. I can never understand them, when they try to speak english, especially when they havn't been in the country for long

I usually have a tough time, my dad can understand people with foreign accents better then I can. I think if their accents were mild I would be able to understand more but the majority of the foreign people I encounter at work have very thick heavy accents and they usually get mad at me if I'm on the phone talking to them and I keep having them repeat everything they say.

I tend of have quite a bit of trouble understanding certain accents, but i think with a little patience you can over come it if you listen hard enough.

I have a spanish accent and live like right on the mason dixie line so i don't really have a problem understanding people but my friends from up north have a big problem understanding people in the south...they have diffrent slang which makes it so hard i think.

I have no problem at all with understanding people with accents because my parents are from Nigeria, so I'm constantly surrounded by Nigerians. Plus, where I live, I meet people from different ethnic backgrounds. So may it be foreign or even straight southern from deep down in Georgia, I'll understand you, lol.

It really depends on the accent and how heavy it is. I've gotten pretty embarrased in the past having to ask repeadily what somebody said and still not understanding it.
