I just saw the movie trailer for this movie recently, and it threw me back off my seat. It looks awesome! It reminds me of a Troy/Gladiator/Alexander mix, which is alright with me, because I love all 3 of these movies. Check out the trailer and you'll see for yourself how great this movie is going to be.

Hey guys, I just got back from the screening for the 300 and I am content. I was expecting a lot from this movie, and I think it turned out just how I expected, very nicely done. Did anyone else see the screening, and if so, what did you think?

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if those guys were just naturally built that jacked, or was there massive amounts of make-up involved?

Yeah it's a good movie, the story about Sparta is true so yeah it was an actual event in history, of course everything IS exaggerated, but still, so anyway great movie, watch it

Truth be told, it was mindlessly enjoyable. It had no real substance to it, and the historical event was warped out of recognition. But, it was better than the majority of tripe put out for the lowest common denominator these days.

The actual event, Xerxes' invasion of Hellenistic Greece consisted of no more than about 250,000 armed soldiers (according to Herodotus), not the horde of millions portrayed. Also, his army consisted majorly of conscripts not members of an organised military drawn from across the extensive Persian Empire.

The Spartans owned an entire race of slaves, the Helots, and hence they were hardly fighting for freedom and other egalitarian concepts.
And the real fault I found with the movie, is that the "hot gates”, Thermopylae, was not fought solely by the Spartans. An alliance of Greek city-states fought Xerxes at the pass, and 300 Spartans fought to the death, to the man, to allow for the remaining Greeks to retreat. By retreating they were able to regroup, crush Xerxes' fleet at the sea-battle of Salamis and then finally deal a death-blow to his forces at the battle of Plataea.

And, on a side note, in the final scene where David Wenham (Whose character should have been Pausanius if it were to be historically accurate) leads an army of 45,000 Spartans, the actual number of Spartiates, who were actual Lacedaemonian (Spartan) citizens numbered around 5,000. While the rest consisted of about 35,000 Helots (Slaves) and 5,000 Perioikoi (Free men who lived in Sparta but were not citizens).
