of course riding is a sport barrel racing & whatnot. you like horses?
NewFUN
24-09-2006, 04:14 AM
Yeah, I love them. I used to have two, both Mustangs. I've never barrel raced; I ride English, I won't touch Western.

nice. i rode a horse once at the beach when i was younger. it bit me on the leg while i was riding it. whats wrong with western?
NewFUN
24-09-2006, 05:05 AM
It bit you while you were riding it? Let me quess, you goosed it, right? New riders tend to do that.
I can't stand Western saddles. And with Western, all you have to do is sit there and the horse does all the work. With English, you have to worry about yourself just as much as the horse. It works the muscles better and it's easier on the horse when you can ride properly. And it just looks a lot better.

what is goosing? i thought he(i think) didnt like me just because he didnt have to. i think i was in a western style saddle(saddle horn & saddle bags) i think english is the type they use in the competitions where they jump over bars & things?i think.

It's when you kick the horse...um, how do I explain that? Well, I'll post a picture, hope you don't mind. It's when you kick the horse in the area circled:

Have you ever had someone poke you in the side? It feels like that to them.
That was a western saddle. They always use Western saddles for random people to ride (trail rides, on the beach, pony rides, etc) because you have a much, much better chance of staying on when you've got a Western saddle.
Yeah, they're used for jumping, among other things. English can be used to pretty much everything except things involving rope.

They do? Are you sure they don't do it a little further forward? You're supposed to kick them in the stomach, not back there. Well, actually, you're not supposed to kick a horse at all while riding, even though it doesn't hurt them. That's another thing I don't like about Western.

maybe it is a little further forward the instructor said something like dig your heels in but didnt show us what to do so i just guessed. western riders kick their horses??
NewFUN
24-09-2006, 06:07 AM
Ah, apparently your riding instructor wasn't very bright. It's supposed to be...um, about a quarter of their length away from their front legs. Did that make any sense?
In Western it's not uncommon for them to kick the horses (but don't worry, it doesn't hurt them). Of course, they don't do it that far back, but it's still not the best thing for a horse. In (proper) English, that's forbidden except in certain cirumstances, like the horse is insanely lazy and you don't have a whip.

english riders have riding crops for that i think. yes 1/4 of their length away from the front legs makes sense.
NewFUN
24-09-2006, 06:22 AM
Yeah, I love crops, they're so useful; I don't get to use them often, though. There are also dressage whips and racing whips.

Thank you, I try. Actually, I don't really try, I just curse a hell of a lot, especially when I'm ranting. It tends to piss people off. Do you curse? I've not noticed, I'm so used to it.
