It is easy to remain anonymous on the web and this can encourage some people to make up things about themselves even passing off as someone else's face as their own. Sometimes people will give a false impression of themselves either by exaggerating the truth or lying. A lot of the time you will instinctively know what another person is saying is odd or not quite right. This is your instinct, which acts as a self-defense, telling you something is wrong. It is important to trust these instincts and if you're using our teen chat rooms let your parent or care giver know when you think something is wrong.

We are having an issue at the moment with what are known on the chat rooms as "Cam Whores". These are old men pretending to be young attractive girls that will sweet talk you into getting your email address for a cam show then eventually give you a website to go to where they will earn money from you. These people are easy to spot. They normally have a nickname that lures you into conversation with them normally something very sexual and inviting. They always ask for your email address which is where the deliver the punch link "Go to this website and sign up" or something along those lines. Please report these people in the #Help chat room so our moderators can remove them from the chat.
Be cautious of who you're talking to. A while back we had an incident where a group of guys on a forum were posing as women and getting chatters to perform some very strange role play acts. They then pasted the whole conversation log onto the forum and had a good old chuckle with there friends. Try getting to know the person a bit before taking things further. Check if there nickname is registered and how long they have been using the chat. If you are suspicious of anyone go to the #Help chat room and ask one of our moderators to perform a background check on the user.

"I'm smart enough to know when someone's pulling my leg - surely I'm not at risk?"
The people who abuse chat rooms can be quite convincing, tricking adults as well as teenagers. Without seeing a person we can never be sure they are what they say they are. This is why you should never arrange to meet someone you have chatted to on the internet without telling your parents, getting their permission and taking a responsible adult with you. Even then, your first meeting should always be in a public place.
Always be cautious and report suspicious activity to the moderators of the #Help chat room. They can run a background check on the user and find out information about them that you can't. We are very strict on adults being in the younger teen chat rooms so please report someone outside his or her age group.
Don't give out personal details, photographs, or any other information that could be used to identify you, such as information about your family, where you live or the school you go to.
Don't take other people at face value - they may not be what they seem.
Never arrange to meet someone you've only ever previously met on the Internet without first telling your parents, getting their permission and taking a responsible adult with you. The first meeting should always be in a public place.
Don't open an attachment or download a file unless you know and trust the person who has sent it.
Never respond directly to anything you find disturbing - save or print it, log off and tell an adult.
