Motionless,
Amidst the fragment flowers of a suburban yard.
If I close my eyes I am somewhere else,
I am in the heartland of another world.
My heart beats with a pulsing boom of a tribal drum.
An African woman, sings alone,
Her voice is sweet and clear.
Yet her words are unknown.
The woman looks up,
She notices me and smiles shyly.
A brilliant flash of white against her dark skin.
This is her land.
Her home that I am wondering in.
I, am but a stranger here,
With words that make no sense.
But I feel strangely welcome.
As though the heart of this foreign land,
Has extended me one large inviting hand,
With this woman’s smile.
The African drum sounds.
One thousand voices ring clear into the still night.
One thousand voices are one under the stars.
It is the voice of Africa joining the people.
I don’t know what they’re singing.
The words are all strange to me,
But I can feel the meanings in the rhythms and melodies
See it in their face, their souls.
My only crime is that I am black they sing.
Their power soars,
Their harmonies extend
Imaged words more powerful than those I comprehend.
I may never know what it is they’re singing tonight,
But I need never know.
What I know is in my heart and it needs no translation.
A beauty to beautiful to describe,
Like those I saw united under the African sky.
Like those I saw the night I was in Africa.
